Paul Mescal has opened up about his "difficult" split from Phoebe Bridgers.
The couple split back in December after rumours that Phoebe was romantically linked to American comedian Bo Burnham.
Paul and Phoebe had reportedly gotten engaged ahead of their split and were rumoured to have bought a house in West Cork together.
Now, Paul has addressed the break up in a new cover interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Being asked if he would ever speak publically about the split, the Maynooth native said: "Maybe at some point. But just not now. It’s just difficult territory. Yeah.”
Paul and Phoebe were both noticeably private when it came to their relationship and rarely made reference to it publically.
The Aftersun star told Vanity Fair last month: “I definitely feel the temptation to say the status of my whatever—that will always be there. But I don’t think that’s a wise thing to do.”
He continued: “When Normal People came out, I was very forthright in interviews, and it didn’t actually serve me. But the temptation still exists to be like, ‘Shut the f**k up. This is my life. This is what’s going on. Or this is what’s going on.’”
“But moving forward as much as I can, that’s going to be my life that is private. That’s a difficult thing to achieve.”
He added that by telling the world about his personal life isn't something that helps him, and it's not something that helps in the long run.
Earlier this year, sources claimed Irish actor Mescal called off the engagement.
Many fans believed he and Bridgers had an open relationship, but an insider shut the rumours down.
A source told DeuxMoi: “Can confirm the engagement is off between Paul Mescal and Phoebe Bridgers. It’s not an open relationship in the slightest. Paul found out about Phoebe and Bo and called off the engagement,”
The Normal People star started dating the singer in August 2020. The pair confirmed their relationship in late 2021 when they made their red carpet-debut.
Mescal responded to engagement rumours earlier this year. In November, The Guardian confirmed the actor was engaged to Bridgers after interviewing him.
