With plenty of brilliant eco-friendly cafés and restaurants popping up all the time, it doesn’t require a huge amount of planning to be more sustainable. So if you’re looking to eat great food while having minimal impact on the planet, take a look at some of these environmentally friendly places…
Sweet As… Diner, Sligo
This newly opened veggie and vegan spot in the northwest has a zero-waste policy, ferments its own vegetables and is totally plastic-free. The organic, seasonal and locally sourced menu is all about flavour, serving up dishes such as hotpots, miso turmeric noodle bowls, pastries and tarts.
Dela, Galway
The pair behind this foodie haven (local couple Joe and Margaret Bohan) grow as much of their own produce as possible on their Moycullen farm with an average ‘plot to plate’ time of just minutes. Dela has a focus on offering sustainable, nutritious dishes and its brunch is one of the best around.
As One, Dublin
This new zero waste space on the quays is committed to sustainability and even has a brown bin for customers to use if they have no options around their own area. As One tailors its menu for a happy gut and better wellbeing, with local, seasonal ingredients forming a key part of this.
The Duck, Gorey
The beautiful Marlfield House just a few minutes outside Gorey in Co. Wexford has its own on-site kitchen garden that supplies most of the vegetables and herbs to its terrace restaurant, The Duck. Anything that can’t be grown in the garden is sourced from local producers in Wicklow and Wexford; from the fresh, local seafood to the eggs from next door’s farm.
OHK, Kinsale
Easily the cutest café in Cork, O’Herlihy’s Kinsale has been in the same family for five generations now and uses artisanal produce from the local area; even the coffee is locally roasted from the Golden Bean in Shanagarry. Its Mediterranean-inspired menu includes plenty of colourful salad plates which are a must-try here.
Lucky Tortoise, Dublin
The team behind this popular Aungier Street dim sum restaurant strives towards a zero-waste policy and they have put a serious amount of work into it.
Toilet paper and napkins have been swapped out for compostable alternatives, drinks are available exclusively by tap, with no bottles or cans used whatsoever, while food waste, packaging and cleaning products are all next on their hitlist. Not to mention the fact that their dumplings are absolutely delicious.
Milish Bakery, Bundoran
A stunning little gluten-free bakery that also has a zero-waste policy (always a massive plus) and is plastic free. Created by cookbook author Finn Ní Fhaolain, they use unloved t-shirts as cleaning cloths and compostable bin bags.
On the menu, expect to see plenty of plant-based recipes including banana bread and delicious porridge bowls, as well as sweet treats like doughnuts, waffles, cakes and cookies.

One tonne of recycled plastic saves 5,774 kWh of energy. So, for 18GWh, that’s the equivalent of 3,117 tonnes of plastic being recycled.*
