Well, this is infuriating.
Women in Ireland earn 13.9% less than men according to official data from the EU.
The statistics, which are based on figures from 2014, were calculated using gross hourly pay and compare a 12% difference in earnings between men and women.
According to the
Irish Times, the gender pay gap, which looks at the difference between all men and women across an entire company, is often confused with equal pay under which people who do the same work are expected to get the same rate of pay.
Apart from the overarching figure, we know little about the pay gap in different companies in the Republic.
But, a review was commissioned by RTÉ after criticism over the difference in broadcaster pay.
The RTÉ pay gap came in a 4%, substantially lower than the national average but it doesn't include the pay going to broadcasters through external companies like Ryan Tubridy.
Ryanair reported a 67% pay gap between male and female employees. It also reported that only 1.4% of its pilots were women while women accounted for 69% of its cabin crew.
New legislation has come before the cabinet that would compel organisations to release the data.
