Woman with coeliac disease suffers reaction on 15 hour flight after being served a plain croissant

The airline are now investigating the matter.

An airline has confirmed it is “investigating” how a woman with coeliac disease was allowed to be served a plain croissant. Influencer Chloë Chapdelaine was on a 15-hour flight from Dubai to Los Angeles that ended up being the “worst” of her life because of the food error. The 25-year-old, who has coeliac disease, said she made sure she selected gluten-free meal options before boarding the Emirates flight. But she was given a plain croissant on the flight, and it was only after eating half of it that she was informed it contained gluten. This led to her suffering from diarrhoea, nausea, stomach cramps and itching skin throughout the flight. She shared her awful experience in a TikTok which has been viewed more than 2.7 million times at the time of writing. They responded to the video saying: “We are disappointed to hear Ms Chapdelaine’s complaint. Emirates aims to cater to all passenger specific needs by offering a number of special meals that cover as many medical, dietary and religious requirements as possible. “The safety and health of our customers is taken very seriously. Ms. Chapdelaine has reached out to our Customer Affairs team, and we are investigating the issue.” Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakes substances found inside gluten as a threat to the body and attacks them. This damages the gut and means the body cannot properly take in nutrients. The condition affects 1 in 100 people and there is no cure.
