Dr Cillian De Gascun, chair of the Covid-19 Expert Advisory Group, has warned that Ireland could return to phase 2 of the roadmap if cases continue to rise.
Speaking on Today with Sarah McInerney on RTE Radio One earlier, Dr Cillian De Gascun suggested that if new Covid-19 cases were to reach 100 per day again, Ireland could be forced into returning to phase 2 of the roadmap, which previously ran from June 8 until June 28.
Dr De Gascun told the programme: "If we get to more than 100 cases per day, we would be looking at perhaps taking a step backwards into Phase 2", before adding "it is just a concern at this stage. The R number can be affected by a few large clusters. It's not as if cases are popping up all over the country.”

Earlier this week it
was confirmed that phase 4, which was due to begin on Monday has been deferred until August 10. This was largely due to the fact that the reproductive rate of Covid-19 has reached between 1.2 and 1.8, with the aim being to get it back to below zero.
If Ireland does go back to
phase 2, it could mean the reintroduction of the 20km travel limit with a maximum of six people being allowed at social gatherings within households. Yesterday, 21 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed.
