How To Know Whether You Get Paid For Missing Work Because Of Snow Storm Emma

The Irish Times is reporting that the "Beast from the East" could have an influence on Irish workers' pay packet depending on where they work. 

Employees and employers are being warned to expect the worst as the country braces itself for the most severe weather warning since Hurricane Ophelia. 

For employees, a main concern is whether they are getting paid or not because their employer tells them not to go to work or they can't make it in because of the weather or because of school closures and they are left minding children. 

The law states that employers are not entitled to pay their workers if they physically can't get to work but many places have policies in place to cover such costs in the event of adverse weather conditions. 

Employers group Ibec say that employers should provide for "flexibility" in the case of these events, especially for those who travel long distances to go to work.

As well as this, they should allow staff to leave work early to avoid "worsening weather conditions". 

At the moment, the conditions are being judged on a hour-by-hour basis so although you could be in work at the moment, an hour from now you could be preparing to take tomorrow off.

So, it's worth finding out from your employer whether you will get paid or not if you're unable to come to work because of the snow.
