The referendum on the Eighth Amendment will be held on May 25, it has been reported.
The government chose the last Friday of the month to ensure that students would be able to go home to vote, according to The Times.
Yesterday ministers approved the draft wording of a bill, but this will not be published until at least March 6.
An official announcement of the date has not yet been made, and there are fears that the timeline could be derailed by a case before the Supreme Court at the moment regarding the rights of the unborn.
Leo Varadkar has said it "may be prudent to see what the result of that case is", but a government spokesperson dismissed the idea that the referendum would be delayed.
