Ireland's Rugby 7s squad secured Olympic qualification yesterday and the emotions of the occasion were summed up perfectly by captain Billy Dardis afterwards.
A 28-19 victory over France in Monaco secured Ireland's path to Tokyo and Billy Dardis left viewers under no illusions as to how much it meant in his post-match interview. Trying to articulate how "cool" the achievement is, Dardis finally landed on "when you're 60 years-old and you're down in the pub, people will be like 'that guy went to the Olympics' and that's pretty cool."
Dardis was emotional throughout as he remembered to thank his family, friends and team mates, including 2019 Love Island winner Greg O'Shea. He also expressed his hope that the team can inspire the youngsters of Ireland to pick up a rugby ball and follow their own dreams.
