First, young people were told to stop spending so much money of expensive coffees if they wanted to get a foot on the property ladder, and now an Australian businessman is targeting something ever more precious.
Avocado toast can now no longer be eaten guilt free.
Tim Gurner, a property developer in Melbourne whose projects are worth more than €2.5 billion has angered the millennial generation for his comments on 60 Minutes in Australia, where he suggested that the reason young people today are struggling to buy a home is because they waste their money on avocado toast.
“When I was trying to buy my first home, I wasn’t buying smashed avocado for €12 and four coffees at €2.60 each,” he said.
“We’re at a point now where the expectations of younger people are very, very high.”
He added: “We are coming into a new reality where a lot of people won’t own a house in their lifetime. That is just the reality.”
And obvs you'll never be able to buy a home when, as Tim says, "you’re spending €26 a day on smashed avocados and coffees and not working. Of course.”
