Vice Wrote An Article On How Leo Varadkar Is ‘Embarrassing Irish People’ And It Is Cutthroat

Leo Varadkar is just one month into his new job as Taoiseach na hÉireann and in that four weeks or thereabouts, the Dublin native has seen a wave of interest in his new role.

Non-Irish and those not au fait with current Irish affairs may have heard that the country previously known as being the most prominent Catholic in the world hired their first 'gay, Indian president', causing people to erupt with joy at the sign of change in a setting with an otherwise restrictive and unsympathetic past.

Bloody hell - Time Magazine even stuck our new leader on the cover for God's sake.

Yes, it seems the Earth somewhat shattered at the news, but Irish minds remain unsure.

Vice Magazine rose to the challenge of putting pen to paper about the new Taoiseach, with Irish writer Megan Nolan taking the helm of an article entitled The Irish Prime Minister Keeps Embarrassing Ireland and Irish People.

The article is cutthroat, showcasing the opinion of those who may not be on Team Leo.

The video of Varadkar is genuinely difficult for me as an Irish person to sit through. Partly this is because of his voice – he has a voice particular to a specific subset of well-to-do Dubliners, nasal and droning, inextricably associated with deck shoes and nightclubs with table service and habitual embezzling. But largely it's how familiar the whole miserable dynamic is: the Irish politician doing some half-hearted clowning for his perceived betters, desperate as a bullied kid to just be liked no matter what it takes.

A very interesting read as an Irish person, looking deeply into the Irish psyche via microscope.
