Uh Oh – Europe Could Be Facing Into A Wine Shortage Crisis

Slight increases in temperature of European countries in the Mediterranean could have a damaging effect on the wine industry.

Researchers have warned that global warming would cause workers unable to harvest the grapes in the summer due to extreme hear, which would mean a decreased harvest and less wine produced.

Researchers found in their study of workers hand picking grapes in Cyprus that high temperatures of up to 36 degree led to a “significant labour loss of up to 27%”.

Large losses worldwide 

"With the wine industry comprising 0.2% of the world’s GDP, increased temperatures from global warming may negatively impact the industry and even potentially result in large losses worldwide."

The researchers also said that as wine production is still mainly done manually, the effects of climate change would be "more prevalent" on the wine industry.
