Former Ireland midfielder Alan McLoughlin has passed away at the age of 54.
Alan McLoughlin had been battling cancer and issued a personal statement in March to update fans on his condition. The news of his death was confirmed by his former club Portsmouth this afternoon.

McLoughlin was an integral part of the Irish team under the management of both Jack Charlton and Mick McCarthy throughout the 1990s. He is perhaps best remembered for scoring the goal that secured World Cup 1994 qualification against Northern Ireland at Windsor Park in November 1993.

Manchester-born McLoughlin most notably played for Portsmouth and Swindon Town during and 18-year club career, having started out as a trainee at Manchester United. In recent years, he turned his hand to coaching.
