In 2018, people on Twitter connected, campaigned, learned, laughed, debated, and had conversations.
As the year draws to a close, Twitter has reflecting on the year that was: from breaking news, entertainment, sports and conversations and has released the top hashtags for 2018.
When it comes to Irish News, there was only ever going to be one hashtag at the top of the list.
The referendum to repeal the eighth amendment was one of the most discussed topics this year, with #repealthe8th coming in as the top shared hashtag by Irish Twitter.
Other popular referendum hashtags shared were #together4yes, #8thref, #savethe8th and #repealthe8th.
This was closely followed by discussion around #brexit and the Presidential election, with lots of people joining the conversation using #aras18.
Then, Storm Emma took over our social media as we were stuck inside ranting and raving about #beastfromtheeast.
And #gdpr came in at 5th place. This has probably slipped our minds at this stage of the year but at the time, we were getting emails about it left, right and centre that made it the most talked about letters throughout the world.
When it came to Sport, it was the usual suspects who floated around the top spot. Man United, Liverpool, Irish Rugby, Conor McGregor and Official GAA were the most talked about accounts on Twitter.
One of the most watched television shows of the year, #LoveIsland, was equally as popular on Twitter.
Ryan O’Shaughnessy made it through to the final in Lisbon in May and helped to make #Eurovision the second most used television and entertainment hashtag by Irish Tweeters.
Irish television viewers clearly love a good debate as the next three spots went to the Tonight Show (#tonighttv3), RTÉ Prime Time (#rtept) and Claire Byrne Live (#cblive).
