This Nightclub Has Been Given a Special License To Open at 12:01 on Stephen’s Morning

A Donegal nightclub has been given a special licence to open in the early hours of Stephen's Day morning.

Limelight nightclub in Glenties will open its doors at 12:01am on the 26th to anyone looking for a Christmas pint. The venue must wait until after midnight because the sale of alcohol on Christmas Day is illegal. 

The license is believed to be the only one that was issued in the north-west of the country, according to Newstalk.

The plan to open the nightclub on the festive day has caused some controversy amongst Gardaí and some locals in the Donegal village.

Chair of the Glenties community development group, Brian Carr, told Newstalk that for years the nightclub always opened on Stephen's Morning, but the license was revoked in 2012.

He said: "[This year's special licence] has caused a little bit of controversy around the town. There's going to be so many people landing in Glenties on Christmas night... our population will probably treble from 800 people to 1,600 revellers in the town that night."

"Some of the local residents have a grievance that the judge granted this licence again."

Mr Carr added that although people will be in the area until around 5am on Stephen's morning, the nightclub owners will move them out of the town quickly. 

He said: "I think there's some undertaking that the owners will move them on quicker out of town - I think that's one of those reasons the judge granted the licence."
