Dogs Trust Ireland Has Suspended All Dog Adoptions For Christmas

An Irish dog welfare charity has decided to suspend adoption services until after Christmas, saying that Christmas is "the worst time" to adopt a dog.

Dogs Trust Ireland are encouraging those wishing to welcome a dog to their household to consider all elements that will be involved in the process before adopting a dog or puppy. 

According to Independent.ie, Suzie Carley, executive director of Dogs Trust said: "Every Christmas we suspend rehoming. Christmas is probably the worst time of year to introduce a dog, let alone a puppy, to a new home."

She added: "We have a very romantic notion of bringing a puppy into a household. The reality is a lot harder."

Last year, 756 people contacted Dogs Trust in the first three months after Christmas to surrender their dogs.

According to the charity, the most common reason that people wanted to hand over their dog to the charity was because they didn't have enough time for them.

The charity have been running a campaign called #PawsForThought in a bid to encourage people to think twice before buying a dog for Christmas.
