492 complaints were received by the National Transport Authority (NTA) in the first six months of 2017 alone, with one area in particular soaring.

The Irish Independent reports that the number of complaints about the condition of taxis doubled, with one "extremely dirty" taxi smelling so bad the passenger was forced to keep the window open throughout the journey.

The smell of one "extremely dirty" taxi was "horrific", forcing the passenger to keep the window open for the entire journey, with one other complaint stating that the "vehicle was dirty and there was a bad odour. Brakes and suspensions were clearly damaged as the car made several strange noises when the car was braking."

As for what was to blame for the majority of the complaints?

A total of 212 complaints were due to "driver behavior", with complaints including statements that a Dublin taxi driver forced people out of his car into the cold because they were hiccoughing, while another said that a driver "stuck up his middle finger at me and drove off" after the passenger had taken a photo of the taxi driver's badge after a dispute about the fare.

168 complaints related to "fare matters" with many reports of overcharging.
