Secondary school students will have the option of wearing face coverings when schools reopen in August, it is being reported this morning.
The
Irish Times reports that while secondary school students can choose to wear face coverings, they are 'not regarded as suitable at primary level'. Teachers won't be required to wear face coverings as they 'can make communication difficult'.
On Friday, Taoiseach Micheál Martin
confirmed that all schools will be reopening at the end of August with measures in place to ensure the safety of staff and students. Those measures are expected to be officially announced today and will include alterations to classrooms with lockers and cupboards removed if necessary.
Teachers' desks will be required to be one to two metres away from pupils while double classes should be planned at secondary level to reduce movement around schools.
Staggered drop-off and pick-up times will also be recommended where possible.
