There’s Plans For Cars To Be Banned From Galway City Centre

Galway city councillors will look at plans to rid Galway city of private vehicles in a bid to make the city centre more pedestrian and cyclist friendly.

The Galway City Centre Transport Management Plan will be presented to councillors at their next meeting at the beginning of January, with the objective ‘to remove non-essential motorised traffic from the core city centre area’.

The Connacht Tribune reports that the plan also includes an outline for bus only routes around the city centre area and that cars will likely be banned from Eglinton Street and from using College Road as a through route to and from the city.

Fianna Fáil councillor, Michael Crowe, told the Galway City Tribune: “Something has to be done as regards the traffic situation around the city – I think that we all accept that. Change just has to come – and it won’t be easy – but we must face up to the challenge in front of us.”
