Former President Mary Robinson launched the event on the 5th October.

  Lidl has officially opened an exciting new venture which has seen the retailer develop a farm experience, optimal for school tours. The experience aims to teach children the importance of growing fruit and vegetables, and is based at its distribution centre in Newbridge, Kildare; the retailer has turned 8.5 acres of land into a free educational resource. Visitors will be brought into a specially made facility to learn about how the retailer sources local produce, how crops grow and then will get a practical demo of crop growing. There will also be tours of the Lidl distribution centre; these will provide children with some insight into how the retail supply chain works. Lidl CEO J.P. Scally says this of the new project:

"The promotion of healthy eating is a key element of our sustainability strategy at Lidl. The Lidl Farm will provide an excellent opportunity for the school children of Ireland to gain a better understanding of where their food comes from."

Schools will be able to book slots on the farm for day tours. The best part is that these school tours are free; each institution only needs to cover the cost of transport to the Lidl farm. These tours are best suited for students in 2nd-6th Class. They are available in October, and will begin again in April until the end of the school year.
