The Divorce Referendum has passed by an overwhelming majority.
The votes for the local and elections are currently still being counted but the results of the divorce referendum have been made official.
In 1995 the legalisation of divorce passed marginally but it seems this time around Ireland is very much more open to the idea. The referendum that is currently in our constitution means that couples must live apart for a four year period before divorce. 82.1% have voted Yes to change this law.
Every county voted Yes in favour of the amendment, with the largest No vote being in Monaghan at a small 24%.

The result was made official at Dublin Castle early this morning. The issue will now be for the Oireachtas to legislate, but it has been proposed that the waiting period will be reduced to two years.

The amendment will also make it easier for the Irish state to recognise foreign divorces.
The highest Yes vote was in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, where 86.7% voted in favour of the proposal.
