Gardaí investigating a stabbing incident in Dundalk Co Louth shortly before 9am this morning have told reporters at a media briefing today that terrorism has not been ruled out as a motive behind the attacks.
A 24-year-old Japanese man died after being stabbed this morning and two other men were injured in attacks on nearby streets.
An 18-year-old Egyptian man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently detained in Dundalk Garda Station.
There are currently three scenes preserved for technical examination, Avenue Road, Inner Relief Road and Seaton.
At the press briefing this afternoon, Gardaí said that the attacks appeared to be "random and unprovoked" and that emergency services were on the scene within seven minutes.
The attacker was carrying a fencing pole and may have also had two the knives.
Chief Superintendent Christy Mangan said that “We want to know why he was in Dundalk."
”We are very interested to know who he was staying with, who he knows and what he was doing here.”
Gardaí also said that it's believed the attacker was applying for asylum status in Ireland.
