Irish MMA fans woke up to the news this morning that Conor McGregor had announced his retirement from the sport.
At around 5am our time, the Dubliner posted a message to his 7.5 million Twitter followers which read: 'Hey guys quick announcement, I’ve decided to retire from the sport formally known as “Mixed Martial Art” today. I wish all my old colleagues well going forward in competition. I now join my former partners on this venture, already in retirement. Proper Pina Coladas on me fellas!'
This isn't the first time McGregor has abruptly called it a day having previously announced his retirement just four months before beating Nate Diaz in 2016. It seems that this latest 'retirement' is also a bit premature if McGregor's interview with Jimmy Fallon just hours before the tweet went out is anything to go by.
In the interview, which takes place at Paddy Reilly's pub in New York, Conor tells Jimmy that "I am in talks to fight in July, I am in shape and I am ready. I don't need to fight, but family is set for life but I am eager to fight."
McGregor is clearly never shy about using his massive social media presence when it comes to negotiations and it seems this latest stunt might be another example.
