Shane MacGowan Finally Speaks Out About That One Line Of Fairytale of New York

Once it goes anywhere close to the beginning of December, it's not strange to hear those piano chords chiming and Shane MacGowan talking about "Christmas Eve, babe."

Fairytale of New York has caused much controversy in recent years, however, because of one word.

It's a six letter word and it follows after the line, "you scumbag, you maggot, you cheap lousy..."

Lots of people don't want to hear that word being played on the airwaves. Most have asked for it to be censored but as unlikely as that seems, most are trying to boycott the song entirely.

We thought it would be best to get in touch with the man who penned those famous lyrics to see what he thought about the whole thing.

We caught up with his wife, Victoria Mary Clarke who said that her husband doesn't mind having the song censored:

"He says that he has explained many many times that the word faggot is used by the character because it is the kind of thing that the character would say, and in no way does he think that it means she is a 'good' person.

"She is a character in a story and that is just the way she talks, it is as realistic a reflection of that character as he could find, but if people don't understand that and want to bleep the word he won't argue.
