The Search For The New Ireland Manager Could Be Over As Candidate Flies In For Talks

Just a day after Martin O'Neill left his role as Ireland manager it seems the search for his successor could reach a conclusion sooner than we thought.

RTÉ is reporting that former manager Mick McCarthy is flying into Dublin this weekend to negotiate a contract which, if signed, will see him return to the Irish dugout 16 years after he departed it.

It had appeared that the search had been whittled down to a two-horse race between McCarthy and Dundalk's Stephen Kenny, with the former seemingly getting the nod from those at the FAI.

As a player, McCarthy won 57 caps for Ireland before taking over as manager in 1996. He then led us to the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea where we were eliminated in the last 16 by Spain.
