A Status Red snow-ice warning has been issued for Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Wicklow and Meath, and various schools around the country have announced closures.
Minister for Education Richard Bruton has said decisions on closures will be made by individual schools, "depending on the circumstances in their area".
School buses will not run in areas affected by the red alert.
In Dublin, schools which will definitely be closed include:
- Our Lady's Grove in Goatstown
- St Dominic's College in Ballyfermot
- St Kevin's Primary School in Kilnamanagh
- Colaiste Eanna in Rathfarnham
- Loreto secondary school in Balbriggan
- Coláiste Pobail Setanta in Clonsilla
- Suncroft National School
- Kildare Town Community School
- Kildare Town Educate Together
- Loreto in Bray
- Holy Rosary in Wicklow Town
- Avoca National School
- Ashford National School
- Powerscourt National School in Eniskerry
- St Kevin's in Greystones
- Ballivor National School in Navan
- Árd Rí Community School in Navan
- Most schools in Louth appear to be closed
