The hot weather over the weekend has resulted in a cloud of dust all the way from the Sahara Desert being dumped over Ireland in recent days.
You might have noticed a layer of the red dust on your car this week – that’s because it falls down with the rain in what is known as ‘blood rain’.
Over the weekend, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) confirmed that the
air quality in Dublin held a ‘very poor’ status.

This carries advice to reduce physical exertion, particularly outdoors, as the dust can result in a cough or sore throat.
The latest information showed that Dublin has a status of ‘fair’ while the rest of the country remains ‘good’.

A spokesperson for the EPA told
The Independent, "Saharan Dust events can lead to higher levels of particulate matter, or fine dust, in our air.
"How much of dust from the Sahara will reach Ireland and for how long will depend on the prevailing weather, in particular the wind direction and speed."
