Ryanair is facing enforcement action from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for “persistently misleading passengers”, about their rights, causing even more stress for the budget airline in the wake of recent flight cancellations which has affected 400,000 people.
The Guardian reports that the CAA told Michael O'Leary that the airline was wrong to tell passengers last week that it did not have a duty to arrange for replacement flights for them.
The CAA also wrote that Ryanair had further breached passenger rights when it failed to tell passengers yesterday that they could be rerouted with other airlines if there was no suitable alternative on one of its own planes.
The CAA chief executive, Andrew Haines, said: “There are clear laws in place, which are intended to assist passengers in the event of a cancellation ... We have made this crystal clear to Ryanair, who are well aware of their legal obligations.”
Passengers have been told that they are entitled to a refund and will receive a travel voucher for €40, however many people are commenting that does not cover out of pocket expenses such as booking a new last-minute flight.
