Public Urged To Be Cautious Of Unregistered Charities Collecting Clothes

The Charities Regulator is warning the public about unregistered charities collecting bags of clothes at door-to-door charity collections.

According to The Journal, the Charities Regulator received 30 reports of unregistered charity groups this year alone.

CEO John Farrelly said: "We are concerned not only by the quantity of reports we are receiving, but also the increasing trend in this regard."

These are some examples of unregistered charity leaflets:

Some leaflets claimed to donate items to “homeless and abused children”, “children who live in poverty”, “people with disabilities”, and people in the “developing world”.

Bags and leaflets received for clothing collections from registered charities, according to the regulator, should have the following information clearly displayed: 

• The charity's name
• A registered charity number
• The charity's logo
• The charity's contact details 

The Charities Regulator can also be used to search to see if a charity is real.
