After a tireless campaign to repeal the Eighth Amendment of the Irish Constitution, it has now been officially removed.

A post on the President Of Ireland Twitter account confirmed that Michael D. Higgins 'today signed the Thirty-Sixth Amendment of the Constitution Bill 2018, and it has accordingly become law.'

The Eighth Amendment which was signed into law in 1983 and protected the right to life of the unborn has now been replaced with 'provision may be made by law for the regulation of termination of pregnancy.'

The Irish public voted overwhelmingly to repeal the amendment on May 25.
