Online Shopping Is About To Get A LOT Cheaper For Everyone In Ireland

Dear struggling bank account: please look away now... The news that we have always wanted to hear – cheaper online shopping – is finally happening.

The Journal reports that a new law has been passed by the European Parliament to end barriers on cross-border online shopping. Y'know how when you go onto, say a French a website, you're redirected to their 'Irish' homepage and chances are prices are more expensive?

This will put an end to all that. Traders will have to treat cross-border shoppers in the same way as local ones, granting them access to the same prices.

The new rules will ban the “geo-blocking” of buyers browsing websites in another EU country, so as to enable them to choose from which website they buy goods or services, without being blocked or automatically re-routed to another website due to their nationality, place of residence or even their temporary location.

So, what does this mean for Irish shoppers?

Nine months from now Irish shoppers will be able to choose the site they want to buy from without being automatically redirected to another site.

So you can shop to your hearts content on all the fab European sites without getting charged hiked-up prices for it.
