One Of Ireland’s Euro 2016 Heroes Has Announced His International Retirement

Republic Of Ireland midfielder Wes Hoolahan has confirmed his retirement from international football. 

Speaking to The Herald, the Norwich City man said "it wasn’t an easy decision to make, to retire, but I feel it’s one I had to make and this is the right time to do it."

Hoolahan won 43 caps for Ireland after making his debut in 2008. He scored three goals, the most famous of which came in the 1-1 draw against Sweden at Euro 2016 in France. He also provided the cross for Robbie Brady's iconic goal against Italy later on in the group stage. 

Hoolahan was a relatively late bloomer in the international fold after originally catching the eye with his League Of Ireland performances as a youngster with Shelbourne. He cites his age as the main factor for his retirement, saying "it’s a mixture of things that led me to make this decision but mainly age, I will be 36 soon, I’ll be 38 when the next Euros come around, so it’s time to move aside."

Wes was a favourite with Irish fans as the below video will attest. It was a testament to his talents that there were continued calls for his inclusion in the side whenever he was left out by Martin O'Neill. His final appearance came as a half-time substitute in Ireland's forgettable World Cup play-off defeat to Denmark in November.
