A tragic drowning accident on the River Shannon led to the deaths of a married couple who were on a holiday in the area.

The bodies of husband and wife, Frank Dunne and Alexandra Malkin Dunne were recovered from the water at Carrick-on-Shannon yesterday afternoon as reported by the Irish Independent.

The couple, who both lived in Germany, were in their 30's and had hired a cruiser boat earlier in the week.

Mr Dunne's body was located in the river close to the boat at 2pm on Friday, while Ms Malkin Dunne's body was recovered in the river later in the afternoon.
