Majority Of Citizens’ Assembly Voted In Favour Of Changing Eight Amendment

The Citizens' Assembly has voted in favour of changing Ireland's abortion laws.

A huge majority (87%) voted to recommend that the Eight Amendment should not be retained in full.

A second vote will be held this afternoon asking the Assembly whether they think the Eighth Amendment should be repealed or replaced/amended.

If the result of the vote is implemented by the Government, a referendum will be required to change the constitution.

Up to four votes will be taken over the next two days — depending on the decisions taken by the assembly members.
