Speaking at a NPHET briefing last night, CMO Dr Tony Holohan told the public that they should presume all flu-like symptoms are Covid-19 at this point.
Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan has urged people to self-isolate if they begin showing flu-like symptoms as he says that it's "unlikely to be anything but Covid at this time".
Commenting on the current situation at last night's NPHET briefing, Holohan said that "we simply can't deal with levels of infection like this as an acceptable level of infection".
Stating that all available resources need to be "prioritised in the areas of highest value", he later reiterated that the country is not in a containment situation anymore.
"It is incumbent on each one of us now to take on board the public health message if we are individuals who are experiencing symptoms. If you have symptoms that are flu-like symptoms now, you might as well accept that this is Covid.
"The positivity rate in the community, as we've heard is approaching 25 per cent, in the public labs. If you have these symptoms, it's unlikely to be anything else but Covid at this point in time.
"So, if you have those symptoms - if you're waiting for a test, if you've been referred by your GP or if you're waiting for the results of test - you must self isolate."
This comes after an additional 6,110 cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in the country yesterday.
