An Irishwoman has registered herself alive amid concern for her safety following the New Zealand volcano eruption that has claimed at least six lives.
Eimear Doyle from
Wexford has confirmed that she is alive on the
list of names posted online by the New Zealand Red Cross as part of its family links website.
Eimear, 26, has been confirmed as alive and has contacted her family while the search continues for a number of missing individuals.
"She was 100 miles away from it," her brother Rory Doyle told RTÉ News. "We just wanted to make sure [she was okay]. She rang us last night. It was nice to know she was alright anyway."
It's understood that Eimear was the only Irish person who had been anywhere close to the area and prior to the confirmation that she is safe, a Department of Foreign Affairs spokesperson stated that they were aware of one Irish person who could potentially have been caught up in the disaster.
At the time of writing, eight people are still classified as missing following the eruption on White Island on Monday.
"I would strongly suggest that there is no one that has survived on the island," police Deputy Commissioner John Tims said of those still missing.
Dozens of injured people who managed to escape the disaster are currently being treated in hospital, many for severe burns.
