Irish People Could Soon Face Even Longer Waiting Times To Hail A Taxi

If you've had the pleasure recently of trying to flag down a taxi on the street, or desperately attempt to use the MyTaxi app, chances are you'll be aware that getting a taxi in Ireland right now is pretty tough.

Especially in Dublin. 

A Fianna Fail councillor, Paul McAuliffe, has spoken out on why the problem with taxis in Ireland exists. Dublin Live reports that McAuliffe says that rising motor insurance is to blame for the seemingly drastic decrease in taxis.

He said: “Not since the early 2000s have I heard so many stories of people waiting at taxi ranks for a lift home.

“I’ve spoken to many taxi drivers, and the story is the same. Many are leaving the business because the cost of their motor insurance is continuing to rise."

McAuliffe stressed the importance of a reliable taxi service, adding that Ministers D’Arcy and Donohoe need to do more for taxi drivers when it comes to insurance premiums.

“Dubliners need a functioning taxi industry. It cannot become a luxury like it was in the past. It’s a core requirement for a modern, open, European capital city."
