One of the UK's largest abortion clinics has today confirmed that it will stop treating Irish patients.

According to The Times, Marie Stopes International blamed "overwhelming demand" for the decision but reassured those who had already made appointments that these would still be valid.

In a statement, the organisation said that the temporary measure would see clinics prioritising those referred through the NHS and advising Irish patients to contact the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS).

However, the BPAS has warned that it is also under pressure due to demand.

Approximately 3,500 women travel from Ireland to the UK to access abortion services each year.
