As part of the national effort to tackle the spread of Covid-19, Irish Distillers, the producers of Jameson, is to start making hand sanitising gel.
And they will be providing this to the Health Service Executive for free in partnership with Cork firm Mervue Laboratories.
Meetings were held between the companies and the Department of Health earlier this week.
They said, "The demand for alcohol gel is at unprecedentedly high levels and is set to remain so for the foreseeable period."
They added, "Large-scale quantities of alcohol is being made available free of charge by Irish Distillers.
"Production will commence immediately with the end product being delivered to the HSE’s supply centre thereafter for distribution to hospitals and other healthcare facilities.
"Irish Distillers will continue to collaborate with the health authorities so as to ensure our efforts are channelled to greatest effect. We are committed to maintaining supply to the maximum levels possible for as long as possible.
"Like so many, Irish Distillers is doing what we can at a time of great national crisis. We hope that in doing so, it helps our healthcare professionals in their efforts to protect all of us from the spread of the virus."
Yesterday, we learned that in just 24 hours, a whopping
24,000 people in Ireland responded to the HSE's call for help in tackling the spread of Covid-19 in the country.
Minister for Health Simon Harris celebrated the news, writing on Twitter, "In the last 24 hours, 24,000 people have contacted the @HSELive responding to our call for help! Ireland, I love you! What an amazing national effort. Thank you so much."
