Irish Court Proceedings Will Soon Be Televised On RTÉ

RTÉ are in talks with the Courts Service with the aim of being allowed to televise live court proceedings. According to the Irish Times, the national broadcaster will initially be allowed to record certain judgements as they are read out by the Supreme Court justices. The footage will be available online and may be used in current affairs and documentary programmes. John Battle, a lawyer for UK broadcaster ITN, says that a similar setup has worked across the water:

“In the UK, the Crown Prosecution Service Media Protocol has now been running for over 10 years. Cameras have filmed the Supreme Court since its inception in 2009. The most important thing with all these initiatives is that the sky has not fallen down. Trials have not been affected; there have been no real problems."
