Irish Cancer Society forced to cancel Daffodil Day due to coronavirus

The Irish Cancer Society has had to call off Daffodil Day 2020 - cancelling all street collections and events.

One of the charity's main fundraising events of the year, the Irish Cancer Society has been forced to cancel Daffodil Day. Due to take place on the 27th of this month, its cancellation comes as a direct response to the current risk posed by the coronavirus. Making the announcement online, organisers wrote: "We're sorry to announce we have decided to cancel #DaffodilDay street collections & events scheduled for 27 March. We have made this decision to protect the health & wellbeing of our patients, volunteers & supporters."

According to a statement on the Irish Cancer Society's website, funds raised go towards supporting cancer patients and their loved ones by providing free advice and support. Undoubtedly a big hit to the charity financially, people are encouraged to continue to donate even in the absence of any street collections. This can be done online or via SMS by texting CANCER to 50300. Three new cases were confirmed in Ireland yesterday evening, while four new cases were diagnosed in Northern Ireland today - bringing the total of confirmed cases on the island of Ireland to 40.
