Ireland Might Have Its Own Independence Day

Today the Cabinet will discuss whether or not Ireland should have its own independence day.

The prospective bill and its date will be discussed in the Dáil. There is speculation that it may be celebrated annually on January 21st, as that was the date the Dáil sat for the first time in 1919. 

But don't get your hopes up, the day will not be made into a public holiday - boo!

Fianna Fáil Senator Dr. Keith Swanick told The Journal that "this occasion needs to be marked", however some would debate against that, claiming that St. Patricks Day serves the same purpose and is recognised internationally. 

Enda Kenny said "I am happy that we have one day... it’s the 17 of March, and Irish people all over the world are recognised for being proud of their day."

There seems to be quite a range of opinions, so it will be interesting to see what the verdict is.
