Injury Forces Irish Footballer To Retire At 23 And His Message Is Inspiring

Footballers are often the envy of many due to the perceived glamorous nature of their lifestyle but they arguably have to deal with more setbacks than others.

Injuries often take their toll and, in worst case scenarios, can bring a premature end to a career that by its very nature is already far too short.

That's exactly what has happened to Hull City's Brian Lenihan who has today announced his retirement from the sport at the all too young age of 23. The Corkman took to Twitter to confirm the news and we can all take a bit of inspiration from his words.

The defender thanks a number of people, including medical staff and coaches, and his positive attitude really shines through.

Lenihan's statement reads:

'I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone associated with Hull City AFC for the care and support I have received over the past 4 years. From a medical point of view the staff have gone above and beyond for me and for that I will be forever grateful!

'In light of events late last year, it is with deep regret that I have had to retire from Professional Football. Having to retire at 23 is something I did not foresee.. but such is life! This decision does not come lightly but due to the medical advice I have received it is an action that needs to be taken for my own wellbeing.

'I'd like to give a special thanks to Dr Mark Waller, Rob Price, Alan Peacham and Ruben Crespo for the exemplary care and support they have given me during my time at the club.

'I'd also like to express my gratitude to Steve Bruce, Mike Phelan, Marco Silva and Nigel Adkins for their advice and guidance during my time at the club.

'Sometimes in life you need to give up on a life long dream to ensure you live a happy and more fulfilling life!

Lenihan moved to Hull from Cork City in 2014 and has been capped seven times at under-21 level for the Republic Of Ireland. He has also been included in Martin O'Neill's senior squads.

With the attitude he has displayed today, we're sure Brian will go on to live that happy and fulfilling life he mentioned.
