There was talk recently about the introduction of changes that would see owners of PCs, laptops and tablets being forced to pay €160 for a TV licence — even if they didn't actually own a television.
That got many Irish people worried, but that idea has now been dismissed.
Communications Minister Denis Naughten has made it clear that he has rejected advice from his department on the proposed change, according to Irishexaminer.com.
The move was mooted because it would mean redefining what actually constitutes a television.
The broadcasting bill is set to go before Cabinet next week and will address issues in dealing with the TV licence fee which currently suffers from a 13.75% payment evasion rate nationwide, resulting in losses of €40 million.
