Drinking Hot Tea Regularly Could Increase Risk Of Oesophageal Cancer

New research has revealed that drinking very hot tea alongside heavy alcohol consumption can increase the risk of oesophageal cancer.

Researchers in China conducted the study, which looked into 456,155 participants aged 30 to 79 for roughly nine years.

Oesophageal cancer has already been linked to smoking and consuming alcohol. 

However, the scientists found that drinking "burning hot" tea increased the risk of developing that specific form of cancer.

According to The Guardian, there are roughly 9,200 new cases of oesophageal cancer diagnosed each year and around 7,800 fatalities.

The research team was led by Dr Canqing Yu at the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

They found that drinking tea of a high temperature, combined with either smoking or drinking alcohol, was associated with greater risk of oesophageal cancer than just drinking hot tea alone.

The study discovered that the combination of excess alcohol consumption and drinking hot tea increased the risk of the deadly cancer fivefold, while smokers who drank hot tea daily doubled their risk.

They wrote in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine: "Abstaining from hot tea might be beneficial for preventing oesophageal cancer in persons who drink alcohol excessively or smoke."
