The Chief Executive of a group of Irish hospitals has said that "we probably hit the peak of Covid-19 around a week to ten days ago."
Tony Canavan, CEO of Saolta Group which runs seven public hospitals in Ireland has suggested that Ireland's Covid-19 situation is improving, stating: "We probably hit the peak of Covid-19 around a week to ten days ago and things have steadied off and started to improve slightly since that."
There are currently 1,368 patients being treated for Covid-19 in Irish hospitals, down from over 2,000 just over a fortnight ago. Yesterday, the lowest number of new cases since December 28 was recorded, with 879 people having contracted the virus. However, a new record daily high of 101 deaths was also announced.
Hospitals that operate under the Saolta Group include Sligo University Hospital, Mayo University Hospital and Letterkenny University Hospital and Canavan added that "there's been an improvement in the hospitals in the west of Ireland."
As of Tuesday evening, 198,424 people had contracted coronavirus in Ireland since the beginning of the pandemic.
