‘Historic Day’ As Traveller Community Now Recognised As Ethnic Group

The Traveller Community is now recognised as a separate ethnic group by the Irish State, in what has been hailed as a "historic" decision.

The announcement was made today and has been welcomed by groups including Pavee Point, who said the move marked a new positive starting point in relations between Travellers and the majority population.

"This announcement shines a light on Travellers' rich distinct history and culture, and sends out a message of respect and inclusion,"said Martin Collins, Pavee Point Director.

"It also lays to rest notions that Travellers are a primitive, dysfunctional, failed settled people who originated from the Famine and who just need to be normalised and civilised by the State."
