Government ‘likely’ to add extra week to October mid-term break

The Government is expected to add an extra week to the school mid-term break in a bid to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The Irish Independent is reporting that the Government is 'likely to add on an extra week to the break', although 'no firm decision has been made'. The school mid-term break is currently due to take place from Monday, October 26 until Friday, October 30. Schools began to reopen across the country in late-August after closing in March due to the coronavirus outbreak. It's thought that they will still remain open even if Ireland enters risk level 5 of Covid-19 restrictions, although if that was the case, recommendations would be 'based on situation and evidence at the time'. The Independent quotes a source as saying: 'We want schools to be open but a lot of EU countries are looking at it to suppress the virus, Northern Ireland included.'
