The news ends weeks of speculation over when the general election would be held.

The general election has been confirmed for Saturday, February 8th. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar will travel to Áras an Uachtaráin this afternoon to speak with President Michael D Higgins and seek a dissolution of the 32nd Dáil. Under Irish law, a general election must be held within 30 days of the dissolution of the Dáil. The Taoiseach confirmed on Sunday that he had decided on an election date, telling RTE that he wanted to discuss the matter with his Cabinet before announcing it publicly. Election posters with the Taoiseach’s face have already been spotted up around the Dublin West constituency. https://twitter.com/PaulDonnellySF/status/1217028373811167232 It’s thought that a Saturday vote will allow for a higher turnout rate.
