The Easter weekend is just a few hours away, and an Garda Síochána are preparing to set up various checkpoints all over the country.
The focus will be on testing drivers for the presence of alcohol and/or drugs at a number of Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoints nationwide.
A total of 59 people have been seriously injured in crashes on the Easter Bank Holiday weekend since 2012, according to figures released by the RSA and an Garda Síochána.
Speaking at the launch of the Easter Bank Holiday campaign Chief Executive of the RSA, Moyagh Murdock urged people to enjoy the long weekend, but not to forget about the importance of road safety.
"59 people over Easter Bank Holiday weekends since 2012 didn’t arrive home or suffered serious injury. We don't want anyone to suffer this fate."
Finbarr Murphy, Chief Superintendent of the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau said that as well as conducting checkpoints testing for the presence of alcohol and drugs, Gardaí will also be looking out for erratic behaviour from drivers to identify intoxicated drivers.
Heading out this weekend? Make sure to organise your way home before hand.
Stay safe, folks!
