A transatlantic flight travelling from Florida to Copenhagen was forced to divert to Shannon Airport and make an emergency landing this morning after the captain had a "medical emergency."
The Irish Independent reports that Norwegian Air Shuttle flight DY-7042 was on route to Copenhagen when a co-pilot announced to the 266 passengers and crew on board that a 'crew member' had become ill.
It later transpired that it was in fact the captain of the plane who required urgent medical attention and the co-pilot and a third pilot on board assisted with the emergency landing.
Medical services were on standby for when the plane landed and the captain was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick.
A Norwegian spokesperson said: “Flight DY7042 from Fort Lauderdale to Copenhagen was diverted to Shannon Airport where it landed safely. The safety and security of our passengers and crew is Norwegian's highest priority and the diversion was made as a precaution after the captain fell ill.”
The flight continued its journey on toward Copenhagen at 1.30pm.
